Learning Tower offers Math tutoring to students in grades K-12! Mathematics skills build upon one another. When considering a student’s area of struggle in math, tutors will assess students to determine the place where their understanding began to breakdown. It is at that place that the individual remediation plan will begin. Information gathered from: parents, teachers, performance on school work, and standardized test scores will be used to help determine areas of need for remediation as well. Memorization of basic facts is a key to success in mathematics. The tutor will work with students on a plan for memorizing math facts as well. Like Reading, students will be asked to make connections between concepts and explain their thinking regarding their understanding of a word problem or math task. They will be asked to explain back to the tutor the process followed when completing problems in order to ensure understanding and to help develop the ability to apply math concepts learned. Students will also be required to write to explain the sequence used to solve the problem, as well as their thinking behind their chosen strategy(s). In addition, students will be asked to solve a problem in more than one way. Students will also practice reading and and completing Math Tasks that require higher level thinking. Attention will be paid to the label of answers, as well as to understanding what the question/problem is asking. Manipulatives and other methods of multisensory instruction will be used by the tutor. The tutor will also assist in helping the student and family to transition to the expectations and methods of the PA Common Core Standards.
